So thoughts, is naming a kid after place wrong? We're you named after a place?

I know some countries make it illegal to name someone after a place. I once worked with a German guy working in the US who had a daughter. He wanted to name her Brooklyn, which is a fairly common girl's name in the US, but when he tried to register her birth back in Germany (she is entitled to dual citizenship), it was rejected... Germany doesn't allow a person to be named after a place. So, he and his wife got creative... they named her Felicia Brooklyn (Felicia is a common German girl's name) but always called their daughter Brooklyn.
My name is very common. Closest thing to a place would be the island in the US Virgin Islands.
I was named after Douglas Water in Scotland. Because my mom's side was from there. It means 'Dark Waters' and I identify as it, for I am submissive and secretive.
your profile name earns you a thumbs dowm š
I thought it meant blue water
I messed up it's black water
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Water
I would have guessed blue/green water because glas means blue/green and dou sounds like dŵr meaning water. Perhaps your named after Douglas from the magic roundabout.
@LordMadara admit, that comment was your subconscious expression of your disappointment that you PP always faces downward.
@Gym_Bro

@purplepoppy Are you sure you're translating it from Sottish Gaelic and not Welsh? Also, I don't think my older brother, who suggested my name to my mother, would have had access to a BBC show in the 1970s.
Both, there's a slight overlap. The glas in Glasgow means blue/green just as it does in welsh while uisge is scots for water. I
My name is quite normal although depending on the generation IT can be more or less popular. However, people in my country do not name their children after places as IT would be really weird. Right now there is this fad for giving children old-fashioned names popular in the times of their grandparents and great-grandparents.
I hope Aubrey didn't come from a place but I've never asked. There's a couple I know a few years ago who named their daughter Vienna. The other one they considered was Berlin. Luckily they told me these choices via text so they couldn't see me cringe but at least they didn't pick Berlin.

my name is also Santiago, so... there's tons of places with this same name
Santiago de Chile being perhaps, the most famous one or maybe it's Santiago de Cuba... and there's also one in Paraguay, Colombia, Santiago del Estero in Argentina, Venezuela
and of course Spain and Portugal... which also, of course spread it all over Latin America, even in Mexico and Filipinas too
Santiago Cabrera? My favorite musketeer, then! :D
@NathanDavis That's the man! :D
@TheRealPepperPotts I think I could rock that outfit...
I think a lot of people have names that are at least close to those of places on account of the dumb ways American explorers and founders name places. Charleston, Jamestown, Elliot, Charlottesville, hell even France has Brittany. Maybe the Europeans arenāt as elite as i thought. Ell oh ell!
Seems to be common in Greek areas 👀😋 I'm not greek. Say isn't it interesting how I remember only hearing of a beach recently in Greece named because of that "guru doctor" guy. Personally I have no idea why people walk in extreme heat, umbrella or not, yet that's foreigners for ya. I live in the southern Hemisphere lol it's winter joy here for cold. Shivers 🥶
I like "supposedly greek origin names" for females like Tiffany or Sophie (sort of, maybe it's Latin, ah well) or Roman, ah well āļøāļø
My real name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, but my close friends call me "Dai"
You do know it's a girl's name right
a lot of converts urhghhhmmm. . . . transgents
No, I don't share a name with a place IRL, but my name is extremely uncommon. It doesn't even place in the top 1000 names. Definitely not a normal name, but I think it's kind of cool now. :)
As for on GaG, it is rather unique to be named after a spice, but Potts is definitely normal. :D
my name means island in Spanish, in general, not any specific island :D
I don't care much for it, I just like this name
Yes, Exit Seven is a real place/
That should be your pro pic
@purplepoppy It was when I first joined this site.
I'd have said no, but a quick check shows a village and a river in Romania. They have a strange accent on one of the letters, though.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional.
(Fun fact: after we'd named our daughter, I was told that it was the name I was going to have if I'd been born a girl!)
Lukas is also probably named after a place but it was a long time ago so the place is not known anymore.
My name is as normal as it can get.
One of my ancestors inspired my parents.
He was married 3 times, had 10 children, and died 'old' for his time.
Not sure if that's an honour?
Never really thought about this, however I have dated an India (recently), a Shannon and a Brittany (school). I have a feeling they may be others lol
No, itās safe to play cards with meā¦
https://www.youtube.com/embed/c0m5wJRGHEQNope. My half sister was named after a hotel in Dallas because he won 10grand playing poker. But the name was Diane.
I was not named from a certain place. I always hated my name growing up. It doesn't bother me anymore. It's not a very common name
I am named after a movie star, who presumably was named after a historical city. Sadly, I don't resemble the movie star.
He wasn't Billy Bob Thornton?
@handsomelad70 No. LOL. Where is Billy Bob City, anyway?
Somewhere in Arkansas, where B. B. was born.
