Who does someone's dignity rely on, your own opinion or society?

I can only imagine dignity is given and taken by society, not yourself, it's possible to feel guilty or even shameful but I believe your dignity is taken once the public knows of that shameful thing, or does it depend on yourself? 🤔

I believe it has two parts. With a set boundary.

According to me first, our dignity depends upon our own opinion our own perspective for our own actions, upon how we see ourselves. Till the point our actions are limited to things related to us. Our actions impacting only us, not harming others.

Now when we cross that boundary, and when our actions starts impacting others, start harming others then after the society view, society opinion start making our dignity. The more harm we are making to the society the more bad it will start getting.

For example,

Each and every society has their own rules, like in some societies being gay could be seen as wrong, being unmarried after a certain age is taken as wrong, or if you are not able to do certain job like not being a good cook being a housewife can be seen as wrong, or if a man choose to be a house husband and wife earns money then they will take it as wrong.

Now in such kind society if we are able to keep our head high, if we feel confident in ourselves, and same time we are not harming others by any means. Then some people may say bad about us ofcourse but it can't affect our dignity. Their our dignity is attached with ourselves that how we see ourselves. Whatever decisions we have taken for our lives or whatever things we do lack can be overshadowed by our self confidence.

The people who are telling bad about us their will have only one reason to do so "because it's not in our society" and the logical answer that can be given to them that "it's our life our choice we are not harming anyone else".

Actually society will themselves start following you as some ideal even in that situation if you will have money and power. So it proves how fake were their such standards.

But if your actions will start harming them or others, then nobody will damn care how right or wrong is your actions or how confident you are about yourself and your actions.

Like if you are a drug dealer, you feel nothing wrong in doing so. You have money still your actions are affecting society making them addicted to drug. If you are a currupt officer. You made huge money and property through curruption. The people around you may not say anything thing to you. But behind your back your dignity is zero.

So Dignity is attached to us and our own perspective about ourselves, how we see ourselves, as far as we are not harming others.

When a model slip on ramp or her heels break but if she gives no importance to that and carry on like nothing happened then others also start taking it as nothing happened. But if we ourselves start giving more importance to something we did and we start feeling shameful for that, then others also feel to mock you more and blame you more or laugh more over your that action. If you won't give importance to something they can't also. So it's upon us.

I think it relies on yourself mostly. There are many factors that help shape it like your values, self-respect, etc. If someone lacks these qualities, it becomes difficult to maintain dignity regardless of society and external factors.

Does it tho cause in the eyes of everyone but yourself, you still have your dignity so wouldn't that mean that your dignity is intact, you are just trippin? 😂

No, because if I did something I wasn't supposed to do I would feel ashamed of myself. Nobody else would influence my shame. 😂 For the most part.

But think of it the other way around, if you didn't feel shame from a shameful act but everyone else was shaming you for it, then how important is it really that you don't feel like you've lost your dignity when the rest of society votes you have, id like to believe the majority makes the choice, for example someone can sell their childs organs, just cause they aren't ashamed of it doesn't mean they have their dignity, the rest of society snatching their dignity Is what counts no? 🤔

If someone does something wrong like sell a child's organs, then they are probably lacking something within that not even society can change. Or maybe it can, but only the person's consciousness has control over that.

I dont doubt the issue lays within them but I believe dignity specifically relies on society, but maybe I'm wrong lol

It looks extremely complicated to me, if possible at all, to separate my internal view about dignity from how this view has been and is being shaped externally, by the world. In fact, if my dignity relied solely on my internal vision I would be wary because it could mean that I have become impervious to the world. Which is one way, if pushing it, to describe insanity lol

Both, if I do something embarrassing and nobody see I still feel embarrassed but if people see it's worse. In both case though I feel bad
