Is sarcasm a productive form of communication?

Usually I see sarcastic remarks here all the time and when confronting people on it, it never goes well.

Taking them seriously and being charitable leads to them calling me naive and not understanding the sarcasm.

Calling them out on their sarcasm leads to them claiming they're not sarcastic then attacking me for being bad faith.

Considering how common it is not just here, but in internet forums I have a few questions.

1. Do you do it? If so, is it conscious or subconscious?

2. Is it to make fun of the person?

3. Do you feel it's an effective way to teach/educate/communicate?

4. Why do you do it?

1/3 people so far gave a substantive direct answer, the rest are either trolling or giving blunt reductive answers. This norm that its bad to give complete answers is depressing. AI chat bots are more helpful.

When I am being sarcastic it is done consciously, probably unconsciously too? Sometimes to make fun of someone, sometimes to make fun of an idea, a behavior, an institution, many targets in fact. It can be a form of attack, it can be shared fun, depending on the context.

I have no idea if that is universally effective in a teaching context, I'm certain it worked on me when I was a teen, it shaped my worldviews, my communication and my social integration a certain way, coming with some upsides and downsides. I usually have a hard time communicating effectively with people not into sarcasm, because it leads to a lot of misunderstandings, which gets unnecessarily tedious to manage for me.

Why do I do it depends on the situation, sometimes it's a social signal, sometimes it's a way to tolerate the... Insanity of the world, sometimes it's an attack, a defense, a way to laugh with someone

Would you be for changing teaching methods for teachers to teach through sarcasm?

I don't think it's really applicable, because I believe that sarcasm is a personality trait, which couldn't be taught to teachers since their personality would be forged already. As for the teachers into sarcasm, I believe they can't help but using it through teaching

Would you think a sarcastic teacher is good? Like if a student who struggled to grasp a topic finally gets it, quipping with "wow, you're like the smartest student in the class!". Would interactions like that be good in the classroom?

We may have a misunderstanding here, as I don't mean sarcasm in the context of a teacher to student interaction. I mean sarcasm as a way, for the teacher to deal with the course's subject itself

Oh like if they're teaching History stating things with sarcasm. "Japan bombed pearl harbor because obviously they were the better military force that were destined to win the war" ? Like I can see scenarios in which this can confuse students and if they ask follow up questions it might lead to them being made fun of by other students or the teacher themselves.

Would you say that a sarcastic therapist would be helpful and those who don't find it helpful would be the issue and not the practice of sarcasm itself?

Actually, several of my HS teachers used a minimal amount of sarcasm, at times, and I liked how they did it. It made the topic studied suddenly a bit more relatable to me.

However, a sarcastic therapist would be TERRIBLE lol, as it contradicts the non-judgmental approach and professional discretion expected in this context

I match sarcasm with sarcasm. For example a political question can be asked sarcastically or the asker doesn’t want an answer rather to push their agenda. So I’ll answer sarcastically. Or will reply with sarcasm to gaslight someone who is trolling as I don’t feel they have earned respect.
