What country are you from, and what time is okay to arrive at a party?

Some countries consider it rude for you to show up late to a party and others to show up on time? Where does your country fall on the spectrum? Is this a struggle to figure out when traveling or visiting family abroad?

If you receive a party invite/text that says, party starts at 8pm, what time do people actually expect you to show up by?

In general, I try to arrive on time or very shortly thereafter to give the host a little breathing room. The host has done lot of work to put this together. The least I can do is arrive on time for the food while it's still hot, not overcooked, and everyone else is eating. If I can't do that, arriving from an international flight, etc., I'll let the host know in advance that I'll be arriving late.

And I'm aware of overstaying my welcome. I make sure I'm out of there at a reasonable time unless I'm helping with cleanup at a house party.

I'm from Scotland and turning up at any time when a party is planned or even underway is PRIME. Living in Scandinavia now it is expected that you arrive on time and leave at an appropriate time for the hosts to get their rest and clean up time.

In France you need to arrive late to be polite minimum 15-20 being late mean more than 30 min after given time (before you're not late you're being polite by giving a "quart d'heure de politesse" After you can even come 3 hours after given time if it's a party people will be ways to drunk to care if you're even late after so much time xD

This picture looks like a night club. So what's your definition of party? Well anyways I'm from the US. I'm not a partier if you consider night clubs a party. I'm more of a bridal shower, birthday party, house warming, anniversaries, graduation, engagement or marriage after party type person.

I think it depends on the kind of party.

If it's a party for you your grandmother's 90th birthday, you better be on time!

If it's a party at a club just to get your party on, no time requirements at all. The fun doesn't start till the wee hours anyway! 🥳

France, but country is not that relevant, because such social rules are based on social class and age range instead. So in the very same country, the rule set will differ constantly depending on social background of that party.

Depends on the type of party. If it’s just a sit together, listen to music and chat thing, it’s no problem to show up an hour late. If it’s a nice dinner party where the host spent time in the kitchen, you should be punctual.

Australia and at any time. It is so friendly around here that if someone in the street is having a party, everyone else in the street is invited.

If it says 8pm , I would arrive around 10pm , this will limit alcohol consumption and get me there for the best 2 hours.

I'm from the US. You're supposed to be on time for a party. I always make sure that I'm a little bit early for every appointment I have because I can't stand waiting and I can't stand it when people make me wait.

United States. Never arrive early... the host may still be setting things up. Arriving about 10 minutes late is preferred.

I live in the USA, in California. Here any time is ok to show up to a party. It's considered rude to show up late to funerals, weddings, and holiday meals.
