Do most houses need a new roof?

Eventually, but certainly not often, unless it's been poorly maintained.
For example, when I bought my house (which still has the original 70yr old roof), a couple of the tiles had slipped, which meant some of the joists got damp, and then infested with woodworm, and needed to be replaced (woodworm doesn't like dry timber).
If the previous owner had just replaced the slipped tiles immediately, that would have been all that was needed. Fortunately, the surveyor had picked up on it, so that was reflected in the price I paid for the house. But my house is also in an extremely exposed location, right by the sea, so it takes a fair battering from the storms.

No, a roof should last 20 years or more, depending on what it is made of, such as wood shakes or tile. Also trying to sell you a roof has turned into a big scam anymore. Be careful and always get at least 3 bids.

If your talking shingles or roofing. Yes some definitely do need repairs. Most I have seen are in good shape though.
