I think it has to do more with their psychology. What if others believe it (that makes them worry i think.) It's not what is being said, it's more what if other really believe it. The mind can be complex.

Everyone has some key words, sentences or even just looks that make you react, boil, get angry or even mean.
It all depends on the context, the way those words are spoken, whether you feel accused or unfairly treated.
I have my set of words and behaviors that trigger me just like everyone else. I try to avoid them or those people I know are no good for me and my mental or physical health.
You can't totally avoid to be stressed out but you can take measures to limit them to a strict minimum. That is what I do and it works fine for me.
It’s because perceived criticism of something aligning with one’s identity can be perceived as a personal attack and our mind naturally goes into defense mode
I worry about my reputation.
