What am I going through?

Im Geoff ( old English spelling ) I think I'm going through some mid life stuff. My wife doesn't get what im thinking. I only think of the past, 90s mostly. I listen to san diego's kgb 101.5 classic rock. I have a Sony walkman that I play cassettes in. I don't care about today's crap. The music was a lot better back in the days. I'm a store manager of a gas station that I started in 2012 and went through 3 corporate mergers. I would quit my job and drop everything and leave san diego for a small town where there's less people. Don't know if this will pass or not and I know people today just don't care so me typing this here may not matter but I think at least a few members would read this. Don't really know what to do. I wouldn't know jack shit from experience but it seems to me that this is some variant of wanting to "get out" or having a "mid life crisis" maybe. Sounds like a change of scenery would be ideal. How realistic would it be for you drop everything and move? Not saying you should do that but it might be something you can at least start seriously considering - think of it as a form of (early) retirement or the lead up to it?

Good morning. For 1 I couldnt afford dropping everything and move. But I need to do something. I'm in that age group now where I think of stuff. I keep telling my wife I'm sick of the traffic in California. people getting worst. I've been to South Dakota fir bike week sturgis and I love it.

Right. Perhaps you can make those happen more often? I don't know how expensive it is.
It's not a solution more like a stopper but if you can't afford to move, I'd imagine it'd be a fair change of pace for the time being. You really should be looking at ways you can make it happen - you'd probably not want to be feeling this stuck when you're much older. I know the old city folks in nursing homes tell me this all the time, they used their retirement and pension and savings as funds to move out to care centers that are fairly remote relative to where they worked at your age. That peace of mind is very important.

The only thing I can say is does living in San Diego not make you happy anymore? If not, then discuss it with your wife and maybe try to make plans to leave. Depression is a bitch and you don't want to become depressed from not being where you want to be.

I am encountering something similar myself… I think we owe it to ourselves to take more vacations and outdoor trips to give us some new sense of energy and newfound interest.


I read your post and it really hit home. Wish I could meet a guy who feels the same and do something spontaneous like learn a new hobby or build something big like a side project. I wish you the best

It soiunds like you are stuck in your life and are looking for a change. I had a mid life crisis. I changed careers when I was 40 years old. It was hard to do but I never looked back

I don't know, a lot of them have already moved out of California. Not necessarily to small towns, though. I also want to get the hell out of Southern California. I just want to go somewhere with less assholes and less problems, preferably a place with lots of trees
