As a teacher & a parent I 💯 agree. Kids SHOULD sit with, befriend & get to know intimately boredom, rote tasks, uninspiring people, etc.

Now, is the tax paying community getting VALUE if every lesson isn't 💯 "utterly & totally engaging"? That's a different question and one that I'll ask later.

Strongly disagree. Sure, being bored and learning to be bored has a value. It should not be achieved by killing the drive to learn and our innate curiosity.

Teaching and learning has never been easier. With AI like NotebookLM study material can be created in a few seconds.

I used to mentor. I never got anyone to become good in school by teaching them to be bored. It was always done by nurturing a desire to learn. By making it engaging, making it rewarding. Anytime you succeeded in awakening a student's want to learn you ended up with an academic powerhouse.

Its tough being a teacher. You're often alone with 30 students. Sharing the material takes 30 minutes of your hour. That is not actually teaching. That is not what made people want to teach. And then you have 1 minute per student to listen to any complications they had, adapt to how they learn and explain and motivate them. A near impossible task.

Instead of being afraid of the increased demands on teachers, celebrate the fact that AI is already able to take over most of the boring stuff. What is left is to inspire people. The real reason most teachers I know got into it. That or they read Dead Poet's Society and wanted to stand on the desk.

Okay there are two issues, I will present both of them as I understand.

1) Boredom, is it good or is it bad to have?

2) Student engagement, is it good or is it bad to try to achieve?

My stance is as follows:

1) Yes, children and the young people need to experience boredom in some point and time in their day schedule because it allows them to give breathing room to thought, ideas, and ways to occupy their minds through meaning rather than looking at a screen.

2) Yes, teachers should strive for engagement since engagement comes knowledge for the young minds so, that they can blossom with what they are taught. Learning comes ideas and ideas come endless possibilities. Teach ‘em while they are young so, they can have the academic skills to succeed in life. What teacher wouldn’t want that?

I agree kids should ysve more tome to be bored - no tv, no mobiles, no distractions. But I don't believe thos is the schools duty and beliefs me there are enough lessons that are boring for kids to sit through. But that's a different kind of boredom.

The public schools now follow "if it isn't fun, it isn't done" approach to education. Mo wonder my kids liked school. When I was a kid teachers were paid to make our lives a living hell. Most kids hated school. The teachers were tough and the principal was a psycho. Then you had to deal with bullies. There was nobody who could help you. You were on your own. If you got in trouble you would be punished by the teacher, then your parents would punish you afterwards. All this prepared you for a lifetime of servitude.

There is a push that all lessons should be utterly engaging? Who is creating that pressure? And how is it even possible to be totally engaging, pupils are different, some of them will react favorably, some not, so...

Me too though no kids and I agree 100% they need to be exposed to boredom way longer than they are now. It's important to build resilience and self regulation instead of needing stimulation over and over just to get by.
