It's a good thing I don't live in a place bears exist. Raccoons do let you though, give them food and watch them no longer be bothered by you.

yesterday... I made the really really wrong mistake of looking at some articles about ~mauled by a bear~ and oh hell

I had to re-review how to survive every encounter-attack, with all bears so now, in theory... I am an expert at it

this one in particular I would play dead... cover my neck area the best I can and make sure the bear won't turn me over

Playing dead or backing away wouldn't work. Instead talk in a high pitch like you do with a baby or kitten and stay where you are, it will either leave you alone or be curious, but its faster and can smell if you're alive, so you can either be nice to it, or upset it. Scratching behind the ears or petting its head is your best defense against preventing agression.
