Americans, why do you lock your doors at night?

Where I currently live I don't have to lock my doors, that said I still do out of habit. I use to live in the city, had people break in my house before, break into my car numerous times, and people steal anything that wasn't locked up. It's a hard habit to break. I automatically lock every door behind me without even thinking about it. That said, crime where I'm at now is really low and everyone has lots of guns. Most burgers would probably turn around given that the neighbors are often shooting on their private shooting ranges at like 2 or 3 AM in the morning and they will come say hello if some stranger wonders onto someone else's property. Everyone minds their own business unto some outsider starts crossing fence lines. If a surveyor even shows up to do some measurements, an armed neighbor start asking them questions within about a minute and they let me know.

Having the house cleaned afterwards would be inconvenient
I left my garage door unlocked one night and skunk walked up in there like it owned the place 🦨. If I left my real door unlocked a bear or something would probably try coming in
Yes I always lock the front and back door because I don't want some random person to get inside

Most of the folks who want to come in aren't interested in dishwashing or vacuuming. For the most part, there aren't that many people wanting to rob houses. But there is a dedicated minority who shuffle around trying doors.
Some are nightbirds, but there are robbers who work the day shift when many people are away at jobs. So it's not just about night. It's about not providing opportunities for opportunists, which is what thieves are.
Oh, no. I DO lock my doors. There are times I forget. But the safest practice is to do so. I watched a grown-ass man at 1 in the morning going from car to car trying doors as I drove by. It was obvious what he was doing. I drove around the corner and when I returned, he was gone. It appeared all the doors were locked. But sometimes if you lock your car, they break your windows looking for guns and money and anything of value. Got my side window smashed. I leave my car unlocked. It's a standard and no one around here drives one, and there's nothing in my car but car cleaning supplies and birding books. So far, this has proved unattractive.
But there are regular tales in Nextdoor about people leaving guns in cars and having them stolen. You break into 100 cars and there's a gun in one and you're paid for breaking into the 100. Sigh.
Most Americans live in fear and acute paranoia, which is one of the reasons they have an obsession with guns. Of course, many put them in a gun safe, meaning they are no use at all if someone were to break in. Ha!
MY next door neighbor' house was broken into. The cops cannot get here in time.
Not an American but we do for safety purposes
I often forget. But I don't live in the ghetto.
