Why do Americans say "Period" at the end of almost everything they say?

I've noticed this a lot recently and was wondering if anyone else has and find it annoying?

We don't.

It is an expression that we occasionally use to make a point, and/or to declare the end of a discussion or argument, but nobody says it at the end of "everything."

Most people don't use it that much, at all, except in a handful of very specific circumstances.

We don't say it at the end of "everything". And on the occasion that we do, it's to add emphasis or finality. It essentially says "the discussion is over".

It’s a slang word that’s basically the secular modern equivalent to “amen” to show how much you agree with something
