Which popular name will kids regret getting in the future?

Question

The top five most popular baby names in Scotland are;
(Boys) Noah, Muhammad, Rory, Theo, Leo.
(Girls) Olivia, Freya, Mille, Isla, Lily.

Only one baby was given the name Donald in 2024 for the same reason Adolf fell out of fashion.

For Ireland it's;
(boys) Jack, Noah, Rian, Cillian, James.
(Girls) Sophie, Ébha, Grace, Emily, Fiadh.

Interestly Ébha would be illegal in the USA because É isn't allowed in names

Finally Wales (we won't bother with England)
(Boys) Noah, Luca, Oliver, Arthur, Archie.
(Girls) Olivia, Amelia, Isla, Poppy, Freya.

Poppy's popularity is largely down to my following on GAG (honest)

Adjusting the stats to only include traditional Welsh names we get;
(Boys) Arthur, Osian, Elis, Macsen, Jacob
(Girls) Mali, Erin, Mabli, Seren, Cadi.
(Macsen is Maximus in the same way Taxi becomes Tacsi)

Names come and fall out of fashion. Few these days would call their daughter Karen because of it's negative reputation. It's interesting that Donald, once a very common Scottish name has virtually vanished overnight. I include the list above just for interest sake. But what common name today will kids come to regret having? I reckon it's Noah. " I know a Noah do you know a Noah? We all know a Noah you know?"

Now Poppy, that’s just not cricket don’t you know.

I don’t think it’s the same reason, I think in the current political climate it’s not a good idea to name your son after someone the media and opposition has been allowed to demonise without consequences that he’s had attempted a**a*sination attempts. This insane leftie viewpoint he’s the Austrians return does not hold water, he won the popular vote and it was not a pledge of building and using ga* chambers.

Such comparison is disrespectful to all who lost their lives, and the families it affected. I get it a lot don’t like him, view things differently, but it’s shocking that side has lost all reason to make such a bold comparison and none on that side seem to push back on it.

I feel bad for Donald Duck, I’m sure he used to inspire a lot of children’s names.

If I had a boy, I would name him Theophilus or Cincinnatus. Those names could not fall out of fashion because they haven't been in fashion for the past 200 years. Or maybe Pfizer. . . Pfizer Wiser!

Some people name their kid Mohamed, and then the kid grows up with a default ethnic and religious association by the world that might detract from their natural incentive to behave in an authentic way, either in religion, or outside of it.

I think the best way to build your child’s religious belief, is to avoid excessive identity references towards them that are related to their faith tradition. When you get credit before you act, you might lose the motivation to act.

I honestly find it rather damning that not a single one of the supposed top 5 boy or girl names you listed for Cymru is actually Cymraeg... and even some of those allegedly traditional names sound awfully iffy.
Like honestly I'd expect more Gethins. Back when I was in high school there were 3 Gethins in my year alone: Gethin James, Gethin Jones and Gethin Morgan. It is actually kinda strange I still remember their names so vividly since I barely ever spoke to any of them. I was the one with the weird name. I didn't know it at the time but my name is pretty Scottish (won't say it) because my late father was from Edinburgh... so I was the one guy with a Scottish name in a school full of Gethins, Gwilyms and Sions.

And where the hell did all that "Noah" crap come from? Like fuck are there more Noahs than Gethins. Why is anyone ever named "Noah"?

Noah might top the regret list just because it's everywhere. Overuse kills uniqueness.

Poppy and Archie might also age weirdly—cute as kids, but harder to carry into adulthood for some.

And yeah, any name that becomes a meme or cultural joke (like Karen or Chad) is always at risk of future cringe.

Trendy now doesn’t always mean timeless later.
