Addiction is spurred by someone trying to numb some pain in their life, then it takes over. IT's not a disease. You can't catch it from someone else.
A disease isn’t limited to something that you can catch from another person. The definition of a disease is a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that has a known cause and a distinctive group of symptoms, signs, or anatomical changes.
You don't choose to have diseases, usually.
You don’t choose addiction either. Using the substance for the first time is a choice, and getting help is a choice, but the development of addiction is not. Addiction is much more complex mental disorder than most other ones, but it’s stigmatized by a portion of society because of deep rooted misconceptions about it.

Saying it is a disease like cancer is a crock. People with an addiction made a choice. Nobody gets a choice with cancer.
Not in the beginning at first it is a choice.
Addiction is about bad choices in life.
