What term will replace PENNY-PINCHING?

Penny-pinching is a classic term used to describe someone who is very frugal, careful about how they spend their money. It's based on the smallest denomination of currency, the penny, or cent.

But pennies are disappearing. New Zealand removed one-cent coins from circulation in 1990, followed by Australia in 1992. Canada stopped minting one-cent coins in 2012, and the United States will stop minting them in 2026. It's only a matter of time before the one-cent Euro coin disappears, as well as the UK one pence coin.

When all the pennies disappear, the term penny-pinching will lose its meaning. No one will know what it means.

What do you think the term penny-pinching will be replaced by?

I don't think you should be too worried about loss of the time hallowed term because 'penny pinching' is still alive and well in Australia despite the absence of real pennies from 1966 and of 1 cent coins from 1992.

Sadly we never had the really useless farthing (1/4 penny) but we did have ha'pennies pre-decimal. Something really useless was 'not worth a farthing'

Perversly tuppence ha'penny was used to mean something worthwhile whilst cheap - like hot chips.

Both the later two terms have well and truly left the vernacular and it doesn't seem 'penny pinching ' ever will.

You have a least 60 years to think of another term.

This question has got me interested in shrinkflation with pennies. Back in the the 1790's an English penny was a whopping 1 oz (28 g) and 1.4 inches in diameter. People complained it was too big and too heavy.

Then it fell to a mere 9 g. Their decimal penny started life at 30 mm (over an inch) but fell to 20 mm and a mere 3.5 g. Australian pennies were in line with starting at 30 mm and about 10 g.

Whilst googling this I was surprised to find the One Tonne Gold Coin is technically legal tender in Australia with a face value of 1 mill. Now that's a coin. Everything is bigger than Texas in Western Australia where the coin is minted.

The US cent was 29 mm and 11 g in the 1800s. Very sadly shrunken today and not even real copper and only 2.5 g. About the same weight as half a teaspoon of flour.
