If you find a stray cat, if you take it to a vet or rescue centre they will give the cat a free scan for a microchip, and they will try to contact the registered owner.

Cats are commonly microchipped as a primary method for identification and recovery.

Also check local lost pet social media groups.

If the cat doesn't have a collar put a paper one on, with your telephone number asking to contact you.

If the cat is not friendly, do not try to touch it. If it looks healthy and has a tipped usually left ear, the cat is likely part of a managed colony.

If no owner is found, contact your local animal shelter, or Cats Protection for assistance with rehoming.

One of the local shelters from back home will come pick the cat up. Now, there is always an issue of will it still be there, but my parents had put some food out and it stuck around until they came.

I only remember that happening once in our neighborhood. Don't see too many. It is nice of that place to do that given how underfunded and understaffed a lot of places are.

For feral cats we have a Trap-Neuter-Return program at my Cat Charity, and they are very successful when they go into action. I'm sure they would be equally successful with domesticated cats too.

This is a great question and I'm so glad they do that. I live in a really rural area so nature keeps everything pretty much in balance here.

Take it to the nearest river and toss it in. Preferably ABOVE the dam!!
Either that or find a yard with a mean dog in it and toss it in there. Problem is, it'll escape too easily.

But then you will be sorry for your actions, because you will be overrun with rats and mice.
