I have witnessed the exact opposite recently!
I won over $600 on a scratch off lottery ticket, so to collect, I had to go to the Lottery Office.
It looked more like a DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) than a place where people should be excited about collecting a prize...
You fill out a winner's form, sign the back of your ticket, present it to a teller with your photo I. D. and wait for them to cut you a check... And wait... And wait...
I watched as person after person collects their checks with little fan fair, then a woman, was SO EXCITED about her win, she could barely contain her joy, asking about which bank could cash the check, because she doesn't have a bank account. They told her Wells Fargo would cash it with proper ID, she was good with that, and sat giggly with excitement talking loud enough for everyone to hear with anyone who would listen... Her turn came to here her name she goes to the window to collect her check with all the excitement of a high school cheerleader, when they present her with a letter instead. It apparently said that her winnings would be applied to her back taxes, and she would not be receiving anything more...

Those "deus ex machina" moments, in my opinion, are really just incredible luck or timing, such as when everything appeared hopeless but something completely unexpected changed everything. On some days, assistance arrived at the last minute or issues resolved themselves in unexpected ways.

What comes to my mind is when my son had to have emergency open heart surgery and I sat in the waiting room for 5-1/2 hours until the surgeon came to see me.
He was either going to tell me that my son didn't make it through the surgery or that he did. Well.. he did!! I I was able to continue being a Mom.🙂
