Which meaning of the word SKIRT do you first think of?

SKIRT is one of those English language words that has more than one meaning.

As a noun, it means "a garment that fastens around the waist and hangs down around the legs, worn especially by women and girls".

As a verb, it means "go round or past the edge of" or" attempt to ignore; avoid dealing with".

When you first see the word SKIRT, which meaning do you first think of?

I think the woman's clothing pic is technically a dress BUT a dress has skirts just as a military great coat has skirts. Machinery can have skirts as well. And walls.

Shirt also derives from the old norse root Skyrta for a tunic. Due to the patriarchy & all, the bottom part retained the norse 'sk' whilst the top part got anglicized to 'sh'.

Colloquial English refers to women as skirts either generally or a specific group of skirts.

Being quite patriarchial & all myself, I'd suggest that skirting an issue derives from the feminine tendency to obliquely approach an issue.

As to the actual question after all this side skirting, I would normally think of the woman's garment - about knee high which is my liking. Mini and micro skirts can be more akin to a belt.

The routs are the same.

At it's core skirt means the border or edge. Hence, skirting board or the outskirts.

The clothing name stems from the split where shirt and skirt became separate words for separate things.

Skirt as a verb probably evolved from metaphorical usage.

I would not be surprised if kilt and skirt share an ancestry.
