1 moHurricanes are not that spectacular. Yes they are an awesome display of force in nature. But you don't really get to see much beyond torrential rains and trees getting uprooted.
A spectacular thunderstorm can be just as awesome, think super cells in the US plains states. But you actually get to see the giant clouds, incredible lightning bursts, and tornados.
What you see in a hurricane... meh. 🤷♂️

What you see in a super cell...

Once upon a time I hunkered down on top of a mountain ridgeline above the tree line on bare rock and witnessed something like the second supercell picture. I'll never forget the smell of ozone from the constant lightning strikes on the bare rock.

Wow!! That must have been spectacular to witness!!

It was. Only lasted maybe 20 minutes before it drifted away. But it sort of made me understand why primitive humans came up with the angry vengeful god in the sky story. Thor, the hot tempered god of lightning! Yahweh has been offended. Quick round up all the virgins! 🤣
So whaddaya think. Is a hurricane or a thunderstorm a better show? - 1 mo
A thunderstorm is definitely a better show... even better if in company... Lol!!

We lost power for 12 days, and snowstorm fell as well, schools were closed for 2 or 3 weeks. We were bored, had candles on in the evenings, ate cold things, lost all our food in the refrigerator, slept with sweaters and coats. a My neighbor gave us a heater later. when he came to see us. Finally, the public library got a generator, and we went there, driving for the first time since the hurricane happened. Trees were uprooted all over town--as if a giant had pulled them out by the roots and left them stranded all over; people's front yards, the streets, and ramp bridges. We stayed at the library on computers for about 2 hours. My daughters were happy to be able to do something entertaining.
When I look back and see what is going win in the world today, with countries who have been blocked off (Cuba, Gaza) I see that what we went though was nothing in comparison to what they're going through.
So, I'll take thunderstorms.

1 moThunderstorms for sure. Living on the east coast, especially in the south, hurricanes can get really brutal. Although there hasn't been one to be as bad as Hurricane Katrina, we've had some pretty bad ones in South Carolina that I honestly would never want to experience again.

1 moI'd rather not be caught in a hurricane that can toss me around like a ragdoll. And I've witnessed many thunderstorms. When I was younger and had soccer practice, the coach was intense. He made us play in a thunderstorm where the lightning bolts were hitting literally about 50 metres away from us. It was the most lightning I've ever seen. They were hitting every 10 to 20 seconds.
I've also walked home so many times in thunderstorms where I get completely drenched. It's actually a pretty interesting feeling I get in those moments. I feel stoic and like it's me against the world and I can take on anything.23 Reply- 1 mo
I feel the same way about thunderstorms...

1 moI've been in 6 hours worth of the eyewall of a 150mph sustained Category 4 hurricane.
I've also been inside an Ef2 tornado way back in 2001. It was pitch black outside even at 1pm in the afternoon. It beat the grass down around the house (foam paneled construction with brick exterior and Andrew Code Roof) and beat down and uprooted the Okra in the back yard, and uprooted several pine trees on the property.
the direct hit from the tornado was scarier than the hurricane. It was like something out of Exodus from the Bible. Right before the tornado hit, the Weather Channel was saying "fair skies" for the area.

1 moDepends on the shelter and what I'm prepared for. Like a hurricane doesn't sound too fun in one of those stick houses that looks like they have a lifespan of 10 years max without constant maintenance... I mean I've watched people buy one of those brand new suburb houses that starts falling apart within the first year of them living there, and I wouldn't want to have a money pit like that going through hurricanes.

1 moThat’s like saying Would You Rather Have A Paper-cut Or A Laceration but on the other side of the donkey’s tail it all depends on the storm & some thunderstorms could be worse. Some Hurricanes I have slept through & thunderstorms usually wake me up.

u 1 modepends...
these are two different kind of nature shows...
and if we could take the devastation factor away, lol... thunder storms are just a beautiful thing and I've always like those a lot, but to see a hurricane coming and show can be really exciting to witness first hand... lol10 Reply
1 moBoth are normal weather for me. Hurricanes require more work though. So if I can avoid hurricanes it's nice, but tropical depressions/storms and hurricanes come in some form or another multiple times every year.

1 moI would rather witness a thunderstorm because it’s safer and still impressive to watch safely. A hurricane is much more powerful and dangerous, so people usually only see its effects from a distance or through news coverage.

1 moI've been through both, one hurricane and several thunderstorms.
Both show the beauty and power of nature.
Being inside a hurricane is dangerous. I think I'd rather watch a thunderstorm.

1 moThunderstorm. Hurricanes are way worse. Although Superstorm Sandy was technically just two really bad thunderstorms converging at the same time.

1 moI like thunderstorms. Hurricanes are scary. We don't have many of the latter in the UK, although the way the climate is going that can change.
10 Reply 578 opinions shared on Other topic. I think T-storms are cool and fun to watch safely. Hurricanes are too dangerous to watch close up.
10 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Other topic. Give me a good ole thunderstorm with hundreds of lightening bolts a minute. I'd sit in my vehicle in the middle of nowhere and watch it. Especially at night.

10 Reply693 opinions shared on Other topic. Thunderstorm because it's raw power can be fully visible
10 Reply19.4K opinions shared on Other topic. I’ve witnessed them both. I don’t want a hurricane to hit my house anymore. I don’t have insurance and it could cost a lot of damage
