What is the best thing that you ever did?

That's a tough one, but things at the top of my list are:

Driving my mom and dad around France and Germany for three weeks in 1988 when my dad was 58. He had always wanted to go back and visit places he had been during the Hell of WWII. There were some cemeteries he wanted to visit, too. He finally got his wish. We all had an amazing time and it was cathartic or my dad. The people in France treated him with honor as a WWII vet and he got to fulfill some promises to a few men who were buried there.

Going for a ride in a friend's jet. The guy who flew it was a hot dog former combat plot and was currently a test pilot out of Edward's AFB. The guy gave me a crazy ride.

My wife bought me a ride in an open-cockpit, bi-wing airplane and the pilot performed aerobatics.

Both of those airplane rides were lifetime bucket list experiences.

The best things I ever did to improve myself were:

Finally deciding that it was time to find a wife and settle down.
After a couple more relationships that didn't work out, I went on a spiritual and emotional self improvement program to insure that I would find the right woman and be a good husband.
Two years after my last breakup, I enrolled in a pre-internet dating service, went on several dates, and finally connected with my future wife.
We have been happily married now for almost 30 years, had LOTS of fun, and built a wonderful life together.
That was the best thing I ever did.

Four years after we were married, I took a chance and requested a transfer to Northern California. Once there, we searched and searched for a year and finally decided to buy a 30 acre parcel of oak grassland with an amazing view in a beautiful rural area.
We did everything, had 4/10 mile long driveway and a large house pad built on the side of the hill, put in a well and holding tank, and a septic system. We put in a 1600 sq ft house with a solar voltaic system. We planted an orchard of 18 trees and surrounded it with deer fencing.
We have been here for 24 years and constantly improved it.
We are really, really happy here.

Saved my friend from choking to death with the Heimlich maneuver when we were drinking late one night, I think it was 1992. He was drunk, laying on his back on a bed, eating handfuls of pretzels. I was laying on the floor, about to fall asleep. My other friend was drunk and asleep on another bed. My eyes were closed and right before I fell asleep, something told me to open my eyes and look up. Like this instinct, compulsion, whatever told me deep down inside “open your eyes right now!” I looked up and he was on his side, eyes bulging out of his head, face turning colors, then his eyes started closing and he reached his hand towards me. I jumped up and yelled “hang on, dude!” or something like that, lifted him up and gave him the heimlich, so hard ball of chewed up pretzels flew out of his neck and across the room with a “paah” sound. He gasped for air and when he caught his breath, he grabbed me and gave me a hug and just kept saying “thank you” over and over again for about a minute straight, then laid back down and fell asleep

It is that or saving my friend from being raped and possibly murdered by two guys at 3 o’clock in the morning we tried to follow her into a bathroom behind a restaurant, before I ran up behind them and pulled out a knife. They ran for their lives and it’s a good thing, because I was going to kill them

I mean they tried to follow her into a bathroom at 3 am behind a restaurant, she was drunk and not paying attention. I realize she was missing from the group and ran to find her. Something told me I had to find her immediately and I ran across a jetty, almost had a heart attack, fell and almost broke my face on the rocks, fell and almost broke my arm on the rocks, fell and almost broke my leg on the rocks, but I kept getting my fat ass back up and running and running like there was a giant invisible hand behind me pushing me forward. I found her right when these guys were following her into a bathroom and was going to cut them to pieces before they ran for their miserable lives

When I realized she was missing from the group, something told me that I had to find her immediately. Like I had no choice, it must be done

There’s just like a silent alarm that goes off in my head, and when it goes off I know exactly where I’m supposed to be at what time and it must be done, like I have no choice in the matter and it’s never wrong. Going against it feels like going against my very own instinct and nature

A few years back, I was walking down the street. In front of the GPO I looked down and found the equivalent of $300 in cash.

I picked up the banknotes and asked around if anyone had lost them. Someone told me to keep them but I felt bad about it because I thought it may be some poor person's money that they had on them to pay their bills.

I proceeded to the police station and handed over the money. The officer looked at me with surprise and told me that nobody ever returns found cash.

I filled out a form and was told to come back in one year to see if anyone had claimed the money. After 1 year I came back and nobody claimed the money and it was given back to me minus a 5% provision for keeping the money safe...

And that was the best deed I have ever done and I even gave part of it to charity..

Keep a “broken” family together by putting kids first. Kids turning out very well.
at 19 and 17. They are independent, healthy, responsible, self sufficient and setting obtainable goals for themselves…

Divorce family doesn’t equal to broke/messed up kids.
I also call my siblings often so that we stay close as a family. Family unity/peace is very important to me.

That's a tough question... I'm grateful for everything I've ever been able to do. Have and raise my sweet babies will always be at the top of the list, though.

Researching the family and digging deep while they are still here to talk about it, help in the pursuit of knowledge. I learned a lot and it shaped me more than I could’ve anticipated. Brought people in my life closer, at least in my mind it is doing that. Every little piece matters.
