What can be done with peanut shells besides just throwing them in the garbage?

I have a few small pits in the lawn and I was thinking of digging up those areas and putting the shells in to level them out and then covering them with the dirt I dug up. Good idea, or no?

They could be useful fur mulching around plants?

As far as I know, the ones that I want are all dead for the year. My grandmother planted then about 60 years ago and they just come up on their own every spring.
