This painting by Italian painter Eugen von Blaas, painted in 1897 and called "The Curious" suggests that those 2 ladies have perhaps lost a ball over that wall and are trying to find a way to get it back.

The lady holding the ladder on the bottom may be the painter's wife Paola Prina as she often appears in other paintings by von Blaas.

The tucked up skirts of those 2 ladies suggests that they must have been running and to avoid the skirts being tangled in the feet, they tucked them up, thus my assumption that they could have mistakenly thrown a ball over the wall into the neighbor's backyard.

My neighbors always used to look at me the females every single one of them that has moved there no matter what I’m doing they have to come over act like they’re going for a walk and look.
