What are your honest views on small talk—love it, hate it, or find it exhausting?

I like it when the other person seems receptive to it. I don't like to force conversation onto people that are not into it.

You can tell usually by body language and or their facial expressions if you start up that they're not interested.

I like small talk for the purposes of striking up a more meaningful conversation eventually if the setting is correct. If it's a literal elevator conversation just say good morning lol. Small talk on an elevator can feel suffocating to someone that hates it haha

I like small talk, but not in every situation. Some people overdo it.

I once had several meetings with a company in Germany. We Americans usually spend the first 5 minutes of a meeting with small talk... How's the family? Did you watch the game last night? The Germans, on the other hand, get right down to business. At the exact start time of the meeting, it's Agenda Item #1.

I don't love it but it's a necessary part of interacting with others. The people who don't stop after the first minute and move on to something more substantive are boring.

I prefer to talk about gaming, fantasy and sci fi stories, TV shows and movies (not the modern garbage), morals and politics, history, and similar topics.

Small talk is like the loading screen before the real conversation. Necessary sometimes… but I’m always waiting for the interesting part.
