During a recent visit to Vienna Austria, they were selling this sign.

At first, I didn't get it. Then, after thinking for a bit, it came to me.

Most people got this. Many people confuse Australia, which has kangaroos, and Austria, which does not. Complicating matters is the three-letter-abbreviation for each: AUS=Australia, AUT=Austria.

So, some creative people in Austria have created the "No-kangaroos" sign, which you can find in stores all over Austria, in various shapes and sizes, including on T-shirts and sweatshirts.

I must be missing something because i don’t think the meaning is hidden at all. It quite matter of factly points out that kangaroos aren’t endemic to Austria. Likely for US travelers who might confuse Austria with Australia because our world history and global studies in the US are nothing short of deplorable.
Maybe that’s the hidden part. They left out, “Hey! Idiot Americans!”. Ell oh ell!

Well I'm from Australia , and have seen this sign previously so I'm pretty sure I get it !


Plus in high season here ( Thailand ) we get some Austrians , and they are the only country that are tighter for cabbage than Australians.. not sure why.

It's a joke, referring to those who might confuse Austria and Australia. Contrary to popular rumor though, there is no service desk at the VIE airport to assist Australia-bound travelers who land in Vienna.

It would be interesting to know how common it is worldwide for people to go to the wrong place. It's well known in the UK for people aiming for Newcastle upon Tyne to end up in Newcastle under Lyme. And there's been numerous wedding guests end up at Carmarthen instead of Caernarfon.
