Agree lol… Although “protect” might depend on the cat..
Some would probably defend you with their life, and others would watch you get attacked from across the room and wonder when dinner is lmao..
But I absolutely believe they remember who loves and treats them well…

We treat our three cats with respect and love. They return it with their trust and affection.
But they wouldn't protect our lives. They would run and hide.
@Lliam 's take is pretty much exactly what I was going to say, except I don't have cats. You can treat them with love and respect, but they will not protect you.
I'm a dog person but I would respect a cat if there were one around me. I know they are quite affectionate at times
My mom's sure would. I saw that cat chase 4 regular sized dogs out of our yard at the same time. It was bizarre! 🐈🐩
