Am I morally obligated to keep this cat?

A couple of days ago I spotted a very friendly cat outside my garage door, and she was meowing at me. I just whent back inside, got ready and whent back our and didn't see it. I went to town, and later that night the cat was in my garage meowing. This is how my garage is set up. There is a car port on the side of my house leading into a door (which I leave open) and leads my pantry, then after that, my garage. So I put out some food and it was very hungry. I was gonna take it to the vet and have it scanned for a microchip. If it turns out not to have a chip then I was going to iether keep it (unlikely) or take it to the humane society.

You're not obligated to keep it. But why don't you?
I rescued a stray kitten from the middle of a highway shortly after my wife and I got married. We bathed her, fed her and gave her a comfy bed. We took her to a PetCo or someplace to officially adopt her. We paid them $50 and then got her vaccinated and spayed for free. The vet said she was 5 weeks old.
She was really frightened at first. But after a couple of days, she made her way into our living room, snooped around, sniffed my feet, then climbed up onto the sofa and into my lap. She decided to adopt us.
She turned into the best the best kitty in the whole world and lived to be almost exactly 22 years old. We loved her dearly. I still miss her.

We have adopted other cats over the years and they all turned out to be wonderful.

The nice thing about cats is, they are low maintenance. You feed them and clean their litter box. That's it. But they can be very entertaining and affectionate.

No, but there are those who adopt and then abandon, or who never wash their cat's water bowel, letting it turn to filth. Even the Humane Society is no guarantee of a good home. If you can give that cat as clean, warm and well-fed a life as you have and it's already friendly, it'll love you dearly and be a companion even if all humans around you end up pricks.

No, but you should do the right thing with it.

Me I would keep it if it wasn't chipped or that person didn't want it, but that is just me.
Doing what you are thinking is the responsible thing to do.
Some people just aren't into pets.

If the cat shows morals in return - then: yes.

Scanning it for a microchip is something I probably would never think about. But I would say you're not obligated to keep it if no ID is detected
