Your AC evaporator shouldn't need cleaning so long as you regularly replace the cabin filter. The filter is about $15 and can easily be replaced by the car owner. Cleaning the evaporator usually requires disassembly of at least part of the dashboard and requires a trained mechanic, it can cost hundreds of dollars.

I change my cabin filter every year, whether it needs it or not.

Lmaoo that sounds like someone might be taking you for a ride. Usually if there's something wrong with an ac evaporator, it needs to be replaced. Sometimes condensation lakes somewhere it shouldn't and I guess you can clean that. But usually replacing it is only adding a few hundred bucks to nearly a thousand dollars of labor so it makes more sense to replace it.

Should you replace it? It depends on if it's blowing cold.

If it's blowing as cold as it ever did then probably not. If you keep recharging it and it goes from cold to not so cold, just make sure the leak is actually there. Some guys love selling this job when the evaporator is easy to get to on a specific car.

I'm fact, get 2 other opinions it's too easy to play games with people's ac system. Make sure what you're doing doesn't give other mechanics confused looks.

I usually have it cleaned up when I do the yearly maintenance and oil change and all these stuff at the car dealership.. if you leave it without cleaning it’ll start to smell..

With cabin air filter there will be no dust that could stick to wet condenser. For bacteria and fungi helps thin silver layer that is galvanized on condensers usually.

I haven’t had a car in a while considering I live in a city with lots of public transportation and nowhere to park.
But when I did and when I’ll get a new one I clean these parts regularly.


I firmly believe that a car’s hygiene is a matter of life and death.
More important than cleaning under your bed (which is important as well of course)

I replaced them myself in two cars, because they were just too rotted. The part itself is rather cheap (~100€) and I saved the labor costs. 🙂👍

It certainly can't hurt. It would probably save your compressor a lot of work and improve the efficiency of your car's HVAC system.

Car isn’t that old yet and I always change the cabin filter to avoid problems like that, maybe you have a really old car that never had a filter and that’s what happened

I didn’t know my car had an evaporator, but I take it to the dealership twice a year and they take care of that, so I’m sure they clean that too
