The more I got older the more respect I have for myself and won’t put up with anyone’s shit. I was shy and quiet when I was young so I had people walk all over me. Id say working at a job.

No, just being out on my own for the first time. If you are meek and let people walk all over you, you quickly fade into the background.
You have to be heard to do all sorts of normal things, like make friends, form impressions with professors you have, etc.
