The little flying critter? No, bioluminescence and fire are two very different things. And I doubt a firefly can use a match. But I can understand primitive humans who only knew light from the sun and a fire assuming the bugs ass was on fire. Because where else would the light come from, right?

Fireflies are also known as lightning bugs & I don’t associate lightning with lightning bugs either. As for fire flies did you know that every firefly has its own lighting pattern different from other fire flies? When they light they look the same to us but the same they are not & that is how they know
It’s also amazing how a firefly is not a fly it’s a beetle.

We don't have fireflies in California, but I have seen them when visiting the Midwest.
