Should we dismiss ancient tales because of lack of physical evidence?

For generations, people in my local area have believed there was a large Roman fort in the area. Historians had long dismissed the claims as folklore as no Roman archaeology had been found this far west with the local tribe largely being left alone bar for trade.

The Mabinogion mentions the emperor had a fort in the area around 1700 years ago during our wars with scotland, but that book mixes myth and legend with fact in generous amounts and had only existed as a verbal story for centuries before being written down in the middle ages.

But after nearly 2000 years we've been proved right. So, should we consider other ancient stories from around the world as potentially true despite any hard evidence? Do the worlds myths actually have a basis in fact?
