What do you do when something's not funny but your friend is laughing hysterically?

I tend to give a little smile when something either goes over my head OR is simply not funny. I've noticed other people just add something snarky, which I won't do (esp at a social event).

What about you guys and gals?

If I find it just not funny, I'm might just ignore it or give a smile. If they said something that is actually bothering me, I'll call it out.

I work with a guy who makes many caustic comments and claims they are jokes. He deserves a harsh rebuke!

Oh those are just nasty people. I work with a few of those snarky ones as well. But I work with a lot of techbros also and while they can be very sweet, some of the jokes aren't always too funny (or they're over explained before/after the punchline, you know?)...
