How to tell if a guy likes you through text?

I know a guy but we don't live close anymore and never got the chance to talk enough.( I had a boyfriend at the time) He messaged me on Facebook and gave me his number to text him. He's said he always noticed me, he said " a beautiful girl like you, how can I not". But I started texting him and we text for hours sometimes and he uses smiley faces and :P faces. But I always have to text him first. I text him about every 4 days or so, once in a while they go un answered but I know he's working or sleeping, but I don't get a response until I text him. He laughs a lot and its always fun. I think he's shy but I really like him and I may be moving closer to where he lives soon for a job and I'm trying to get to know him but I don't want to seem annoying. So does it sound like I have a chance and should I continue to text him?

He probably likes you if he uses smiley faces and texts you for that long. But it's kinda strange he isn't taking the initiative to text you, even if he's shy. He may just be really busy or he's just not interested in a relationship right now.

I find it nearlly impossible to judge if a person likes you through texting so best thing to do is see how he acts in person
