When someone says "see you around" does it really mean they're politely ending a friendship?

Depends on the context. People I don't see often just a simple goodbye without saying goodbye. Most often I just simply say see you later,I hate goodbye's except at work haha. With people that I do not like you can tell by the tone of my voice that my see you around (especially when accompanied by an eyeroll) is more derisive.

It could be like "have a nice life". It could be a regular "goodbye". It could even be a way of hinting that they're pissed off with you because they don't get to see you as much as they would like.

I certainly wouldn't jump to any conclusions, just based on those three words.

I say it to people I like but don't see on a regular basis. Like friends that I talk to often but don't get to see face to face much. It just means "I don't know when I'll see you next, but I will."
