What does it mean if a shy guy calls you darlin?

I texted happy birthday to this guy I've got a crush on. He's quite shy. I don't know him in real life but we've chatted over social networking websites for years. We tease each other quite often but he is reluctant to meet me in real life because he said it would be awkward. He replied saying 'Thanks darlin xx' so I was shocked. He doesn't put on Facebook that it was his birthday like most people do so maybe he didn't expect me to know it was his birthday and was surprised?

Hi, In some places people just call people Darlin, in a matter of fact way, but I suppose if he hasn't ever said that to you before, then it could have been said in a loving sort of way, maybe he is very shy, I would ask him again to meet you, and say to him that you don't feel it would be awkward, I would just ask him outright in which way he meant it, and go from there,I'm sure he will be OK with it, and you never know he might come out of his shyness shell a bit more with you,

Theres a big thing about people not wanting to meet up for real, and this is because they are happy with the fantasy of their life as it is, ie, if he can pretend to you he's whoever he is, then all he has to do is believe it himself and your none the wiser, and regardless of you thinking that he has told you everything and wouldn't lie, trust me, people lie, and unless he's willing to meet you, he's more than shy, he's hiding something he doesn't want you to know,x
