What does it mean when your ex adds you on social media sites?

I can't really predict it if he's not an ordinary guy. My ex contacted me a few weeks ago, though, and asked me how me and my mum were. I think she still really cares for me, even though we haven't even seen each other in almost three years and she's happily living with her current boyfriend. [shrug] For me it meant, "I care for you, and long for you, but there is nothing I can do but ask you how your mother is." I cannot possibly know what it means for you, but it may be more complicated than 'I want to be your boy again,' or whatever. It is probably that he longs for you.

We can't know what he's up to. Maybe he wants to be just friends, or he's planning on winning you back, or he just wants a lot of friends, or he wants to see what you're up to, ... Depends on what he's doing, if he's texting you quite often or not, talks to you a lot, or just adds you and does nothing. If it's the first, he either wants to be friends (and not just the "let's stay friends but we both know we won't") or wants you back, if it's the latter, he's up to nothing.
