Why did boyfriend call me pumpkin?

We've been dating for 8 or 7 weeks. I couldn't go to pumpkin carving with him and his family.

Later, he texts me" Hey go outside there's a present for you <3" so I look and see a pumpkin with a heart carved in. It was pretty. I read the note inside and it said" Happy Halloween, here is a pumpkin for my pumpkin." Did he call me pumpkin? Lol he's my first boyfriend so I'm new to this.

That's sort of an old fashioned word to refer to someone you are close to. I haven't heard itused for years, he must be a country guy? Well, a pumpkin carving guy, not likely a big city boy!
