My fiancé and I have a large age gap (I am 28 and he is 50) and other differences but we have a strong emotional connection that holds us together. I don’t know why but even though he says he wants to be with me, he isn’t very expressive or affectionate. He doesn’t compliment me ever. I may tell him things I like about him but he is never able to answer when I ask the same in return. Or I will compliment him on his physical attributes but he will say things like your lips are fine or this is average. You could do better if you put work in. Etc. I don’t really get it because he is pretty average looking and not my normal type but I really love him and have gone out of my way to prove it. I can’t tell if he really doesn’t like me but still wants to get married for convenience or if he is just bad at expressing but every time I try communicating this, he ignores me or diverts. Even though he is close to 50, makes less than me and has been divorced 3 times he tells me he is a catch but never makes me feel like he is lucky to have me. I don’t feel loved or understood by him and it hurts a lot. I don’t understand why he acts so indifferent. The only times I’ve seen him not like that is when other men give me attention and then he gets really nasty and jealous. He has called me a slut, whore, etc before out of that possessiveness. And when we sleep together, it is always passionate. But in the day to day, he acts very indifferent and I am trying to understand why. Any ideas or understanding? I hate stressing people out with my drama. When I’m going through things I need everyone I love to be super fine 😂. The last thing I need is my shit… and then then feeling shit too!

Men complain about getting bored with women (including their partners), get annoyed by their emotional needs and anxieties, get repulsed and frustrated when facing a discussion that is not faced with with logic; complain about women wanting gender equality, thinking they wouldn't do their part or that they wouldn't offer enough on the table in exchange; complain about women being difficult to talk with and "expensive".

Now, imagine a woman who counters the complaints: she shares the same interests as yours with the same depth, has a technical and goal-oriented mindset, is confident and insightful about any topic you open, takes a lot of initiative to drive the day, is not anxious, doesn't feel gender inequality effects, doesn't need a boyfriend (but accepts one), is very logical and assertive during conflicts, coherent, chill and very easy to start any conversation with, men have an unusually very good esteem of her, she manager herself alone by a lot, reasons like a man would, knows what she wants, is generous, trustworthy.

All this can easily come with a cost that is typical of any "too" independent individual: she is sometimes cold and drastic, likes sex but doesn't easily commit to a relationship, doesn't perceive your authority, puts in you in circumstances that imply gender equality, is often too busy for your emotional needs and fully absorbed in her interests, doesn't reply fast to your texts, can't fall for any mind game or power struggles and reads your intentions in advance, doesn't forgive you by just by "missing" you, fights about strongly grounded opinions, is not afraid to offend you with a "no", has male friends she shares interests with, she needs alone-time and if you don't follow her initiatives she leaves you behind.

Is that a cost you would pay?

Personally I can’t. I’m not racist it’s just that I can’t. I mean I can but don’t want to.

• Met while one (male) is on a work trip (May)
• Maintain a long distance communication for two months (May/June)
• Went on a destination vacation together, became exclusive, (female) quits job and moves herself, her son and two dogs across the country to be with a man she has been talking to for two months (July)
• All three move out of the initial one bedroom condo and into a new house, met his entire family (July/August)
• All three are going back home (her and her son are from) to celebrate Christmas with their family, as his family does not celebrate Christmas (December)

Meeting one another, becoming official, going on a destination vacation, quitting job, moving in together and meeting his entire family within the first three months (May/June/July)

Searching for/moving into a new house together (w. child) and attending large family celebrations together, where he will officially meet her entire family (August-December)

This happens to me and three of my friends all the time no matter which one of us is originally talking to them.
