In Germanic and Scandinavian languages it's known as a feather ball. E. g federball (German). Because it's a ball with feathers.

In the romance languages it's a steering wheel e. g volante (French) Because from one angle it looks like a steering wheel

Here in Wales we call it a swallow (gwennol) Because it's shape looks like a swallow flying through the air

And of course it's a shuttlecock in English because it looks like a knob.

I think it's time we came to a universal agreement, so what we choosing.

I've been thinking about this for a while, looking at how things work nowadays between apps, social media, and various chats, and I realize that the way we meet people has completely changed compared to a few years ago. In the past, everything started much more naturally: a sideways glance in a bookstore, a casual joke exchanged at a party, a friendship slowly turning into something more without overthinking it. Nowadays, instead, it feels like every interaction has to go through a cold selection phase first, between millimeter-curated profiles, bios designed to look interesting, and chats that often end up fizzling out into nothing before even beginning. There's an enormous convenience in all of this, because you can meet people you would never cross paths with in your daily life, but I have the feeling we are losing along the way that thrill of spontaneity that used to make everything feel so real and unexpected.

Looking at how things work today, I often wonder where we are headed and, above all, what others feel in the face of this radical shift. On one hand, we have the safety of a screen that protects us from immediate rejection; on the other hand, a sort of general emotional fatigue, where everyone always seems to be looking for something else just a single swipe away, sometimes forgetting to give a real chance to the person in front of them. The transition between the virtual chemistry created behind a keyboard and the real impact of the first in-person date has become a true psychological battleground, where expectations always risk colliding with reality.
