The Thrill of the Chase

A pro is, when you're single, sometimes the thrill of talking to someone you're attracted to is better than actually being in a relationship. It's exciting, different, adventurous. Flirting and teasing can be the best part of making a relationship. Long-term, steady relationships can get boring. They can even be scary. But the games, the banter, the chase is a thrill. You don't get that feeling of building up and the unexpected and the intense spark without being single.

More Time and Opportunity for Relationships

Another pro is, you don't have that one person you're dedicated to. There is no obligation to keep to yourself. You can't cheat on anyone when you are single. That one person in a long-term relationship takes up all your time and you can't play around anymore. But while single, the opportunities are limitless.

Company isn't Always Guaranteed

But a con to being single is that company isn't always guaranteed. In a long-term relationship, you'll always have that other person who is also the most important person. You'll always be able to share happiness and sadness with your significant other. There is always a safe place for you to go to, and they'll always have your back. But when you are single, you have to learn to deal with things on your own. In tough times, you have to help yourself. You have to encourage yourself, even if you do have friends, a soulmate usually can understand you more than a friend.

Fear of Being Forever Alone

When single, your self-esteem may drop. A relationship has a huge impact on you. It can change lives. The power of a relationship is huge. It can change your perspective and teach and influence you. When single, you won't get these benefits. You aren't sure if you are even worthy of being in a relationship. It is a fear that you could be alone..forever. At least in a relationship, that fear is smaller.

Intimacy

This is a pro and a con. While single, sex can be exciting and the best it ever could be. It won't be repetitive and boring and predictable like it could be in a relationship. You won't have that boring routine. BUT, when in a relationship, sex is practically guaranteed. Intimacy is usually an essential part of relationships. It can be the part of your relationship that makes you happy and crazy. It relieves stress, builds up your relationship, and is a comfort zone in a relationship. It is romantic, electric, and builds trust, love, and understanding.

I've been married twice, the first time was 10 years and the second time was 5 years. Since my last marriage I have dated casually and had heaps of fun, then got into a serious committed relationship with a man which lasted almost a year, I just broke up with him last week.

I have to say being in a relationship long term or married is only going to feel good or worth it if it is working out reasonably well. Relationships require a lot of time, compromise, love, respect, honesty, transparency and being open which means no secrets, dedication, effort and sacrifice. They don't just happen, 2 people need to put in 100% every single day. There must be good communication and sound problem solving skills for times when there is conflict or disagreement, there must be faithfulness and loyalty to one another.

It's not as easy as what people think, there are heaps of times when you are arguing, when you may not be talking to each other, when you feel as if the other doesn't care about you, when a relationship actually becomes toxic and unhealthy, relationships can be way overrated if you don't have something half decent where you feel happy for the most part.

After my last 2 marriages and my recent long term relationship I'm starting to think it's just easier and more rewarding to be single. To do what I want, not have to answer to anyone, have my freedom the way I like, not have to consider or entertain anyone if I don't feel like it, I can concentrate and give more of my time to my 6 yr old daughter and she is my number 1 priority, can make my own decisions fully without having to confer with another, have my home the way I like it, go to bed when I like, watch what I like on TV, spend more money on myself, do the hobbies I really enjoy doing. In a relationship if your not financially in par, sometimes you feel like you can't go out and have that breakfast or lunch you may have gone and had if you had of been single.

In my last relationship he never seemed to have a lot of money to spend on leisurely type activities so when he had his 2 kids over with me and mine we always had to do things that were free or extremely cheap, we couldn't step out for a breakfast or lunch treat and that really did my head in. Being single means you don't get lied to, kept in the dark with secrets and hurt, you have a peace that you really don't get in a relationship.

It would take someone exceptional Now to make me want to give up my single life, no kidding!

Ah ok that makes sense. I don't have any relationship experience so I can't really add much to what you said, only enquire and entertain ideas. But I emphasize with a lot of people who end up in relationships where their SO's real self turns out to be shitty.

Is there anything you would do differently now to determining whether a guy is worth it or not?

@UnknownXYZ at this point I'm not sure. Just trying to get over this latest heartbreak to be honest. Planning on staying single for the year at least at this stage. Maybe some soul searching during this time will give me a clearer idea.

I have been single all my life and have read countless articles about it. Why it's great, why it sucks, how to handle it, what you learn, etc. Very useful. Identifying if it's good or bad depends on the person. Chances are, it will be bad for an extrovert. And good for an introvert. There is always something to gain and something to lose in every factor. After studying myself and reading all those articles, I came to the conclusion that I am better off staying single. No fear of #ForeverAlone because I always got my family 200 miles away 😅
What do you think is best for you?

This reminds me of a conversation I had with an old buddy from high school. His name is Jeremy, little backstory with his personality. He was the constantly & by his own doing friendzoned guy. He was so, very desperate for a girlfriend that he would ask out every female he came in contact with almost daily. The determination would've been admirable, if not when he did obtain a girlfriend, he expected all the "girlfriendly duties" right away. Meaning: He just wanted a girlfriend to do dirty things with & then cuddle after. He didn't care about who she was as a person. So! Jeremy found me on facebook & the first thing he says in a message is "So you're in a relationship huh?" Me: "Yeah, I've been dating someone for a year so far." Him: "I'm still single." Me: "Jeremy, usually this would be the moment I apologize that you're alone. But I'm not sorry & there's nothing sorry about being single. Yeah, sometimes it gets lonely & feels empty. I've been there dude, but there are plenty of other benefits that you always ignore." Moral of the story: STOP apologizing when someone complains about being single. It's not your responsibility to water your relationship down for the sake of their hangups. It's also not your responsibility to play match-maker for them. NONE OF MY FRIENDS ARE INTERESTED IN YOU, JEREMY! Stop asking... dammit.

I think being single can have unlimited benefits/pros. In my view there is actually no real disadvantage/cons of being single if one can handle being (alone/single/lonely) effectively and also if one stays away from self destructive bad habits and leads a disciplined life.
