Worst apology ever!! Aren't apologies supposed to be about taking responsibility for what you did? This is a cop out. About 3 weeks ago me & my boyfriend of a little over a year broke up. We had an argument which resulted in him saying that I wouldn't hear from him again. Last night he randomly texted me "I'm sorry". I asked "For what?", he said "that things went bad". He still doesn't want to engage in a conversation with me though. Why apologize now? I'm almost offended, like he feels sorry for me, as if I'm sitting around crying over him lol. Why be sorry if nothing has changed & he still won't talk to me? Things didn't just go bad, he made a choice, he doesn't get to be sorry!! What does this even mean?

I've done the same thing as him a few times and it's probably like how sadly said, we just hold onto things for longer, he's either had it in the back of his mind this whole time or he's remembered about it and feels bad about what happened or what he did so he's apologising for it. you shouldn't feel offended it's him realising his mistake and if you were upset by it then it's a good gesture the fact that you're not shouldn't make it different. he probably still isn't talking to you because he doesn't want it to happen again or he doesn't want to fall back into you because it's pretty easy I personally have kept at least some feelings for every girl I've liked even if we never went out or it ended badly.

I found that guys "feel" the breakup a bit later than girls who have more of an immediate reaction.
It sounds like he has been dwelling on it, realised his part in it all and then sent the text.
The sorry for how things went bad is probably about how he abruptly ended it and didn't give it enough of a chance to sort things out following the row.
