Why did my ex hit me up?

So today my ex hit me up after not talking for over a month. We ended things well and said we respected each other and he said to text him if I need to talk or wanna party etc. I broke up with him but it was mostly because I just couldn't handle being in a relationship at the time and he understood. So he texted me today saying its been awhile but hopes I'm doing okay and I was like yeah im alright etc. and he starts talking about school and starts joking with me and being much friendlier than I'm being. He wouldn't let the conversation die and texted me for a big chunk of the day and he's seeing someone else so eventually I was like why are you talking to me if you're seeing someone else and he was like oh just wanted to know how you're doing and i was like well if you're happy with someone else why would you text an ex out of nowhere. I made a Bumble account just two days ago so I don't know if he found out I was on there. But anyways I was like okay well its weird to hit up an ex when you're seeing someone and it seemed like you were trying to get something out of this conversation other than friends and he was like well thats too bad you misinterpreted me.

I talked to my friends about this and they said it's rude and shady for an ex to hit you up while you're they're with someone else. I'm assuming he was talking to me behind her back and they have been dating for maybe a month now too.
