When a guy says 'I love you the way you are', does he mean it?

My boyfriend tells me he loves me the way I am and I'm perfect to him. But when guys say this is it just to keep us happy or would they rather we looked more like the hot celebrities and were thinner and prettier..etc. Basically when guys say this..are they lying?

Like what you said to timeandtimeagain, I to sometimes compare myself to the celebrities and think the same thing as you, does she wish I looked more like that, and I always come to the conclusion that she's settling for me, but wishes I looked more like a celebrity, and if a guy like that comes around no matter how much she loves me, she will leave me for them. Now I know this isn't true, but sometimes for some odd reason I think like that, and then it makes me feel self-conscious about the way I look. Chances are, your boyfriend is saying that because he would much rather have a down to earth girl that looks like you, and you are cute, then a hot celebrity. In my eyes, that's the way I think, and I just can't see myself with someone as hott as a celebrity, because I would feel like I am with a superficial girl. Whether that be true or not. So me personally, I would much rather be with a girl that looks like you, any day over a hot celebrity.

Depends on the guy. If it's your boyfriend who's been with you for like, a long time... then yes, he means it. He likes you the way you are. Whether he wants you to be different or not, doesn't really matter. But one thing we don't tend to do is compare our girlfriend to celebrities we think are hot. You can't look like them, but we don't really care. We'll always find someone who is more attractive than our current partner, but that doesn't mean we'll compare them with each other all the time.

Not all guys are liars. Some really do say what they mean, even if it's not what their girlfriend wants to hear.

No, they are not lying if they are in a relationship with you.  Think of it this way, do you sit around thinking about how your boyfriend would be so much better if they looked like some celebrity you are in to?  I doubt it.  You may express interest in someone maybe changing some element of their look, like better grooming or updating their clothes (we can get lazy, guys and girls both, when we get comfortable in a relationship), but if your guy likes you the way you are and tells you that, I would believe him.

Sounds like you have a lot of insecurities... especially reading your comments to the answers people are leaving. I just know that if or when I say THAT to my boyfriend, I mean it. I highly doubt he would be saying all of that just for the hell of it. You need to relax and enjoy your relationship. Stop reading into things, especially things that are clear when said. It'll be more harm than good.

This is what I do. I ask a guy what do you like about me? If the first thing he says is about my looks, I know that he is not a keeper. Sounds shallow, but if what they truly love about you goes beyond beauty, then the first thing that will stand out in there mind will be something like your personality or your smile. ect ect.

NO you got it all wrong here! Guys like pretty women and yes the media stirs this up a great deal, but when you are honest: all those photoshop celebs are just normal looking people to. Have you ever seen those pictures of celebs caught on camera when they just got out of bed?

Now, when I would tell a girl I'd love her for who she is, I mean: Babe, you're the best! Sure there are thousands of pretty women, maybe millions, but I CHOOSE YOU! I like you without the photoshop thing and I still think you are beautiful!

it depends on what brings you together, when you identify that then you will be able to know if he's telling truth or not. he maybe up to 'the goods' or would be in real love and if he's for 2nd option then he means it.Gauge what brings you together and you will find out.

I've said that to my girlfriend. I told her that because I liked her the way she was, I didn't want her to change, that is why I was with her because I liked the way she was. I am with her because I LIKE HER. If a guy is with you it is because he wants to be with you. guys don't go into relationship trying to change their woman. Although woman always try to change their man somehow.
