Boyfriend called me a dumbass?

My boyfriend and I have been together for a little over a year. We have been having lots of arguments recently but the past 2 times have been the worst. The last argument we had, he started yelling at me when I wasn't even yelling, I told him to not tell at me but he just got even more upset. We fought again last night but this time he called me a dumbass, not in a joking way. I told him he shouldn't be calling me names because it's disrespectful but he just laughed a bit and said it's no big deal because words don't matter. He said that I'm overreacting and I shouldn't get upset about this. Not only that, but he also imitated me. I told him to also not do that but he said he can do whatever the fuck he wants. A few hours after these things happen, he apologizes and says he probably shouldn't have done it, but nothing ever changes because the next time we have an argument, he does the same thing all over again. I love him but I don't know if I can be treated that way while we're having arguments. Maybe I am thinking about it way too much? I just don't know if it's okay.
