Not in my experience, although I was just observing some of my friends. I never ventured there. It usually leads to jealousies and divorce or a legal partnership devoid of any romantic love. This is why I always kept my distance. I watched one guy go through three marriages this way. He just never seemed to catch on.
I also noticed that the men usually seem to be driving the polyamorous urge while the women just went along and could take it or leave it.

Yes. To commit to what though is the real question. not cheating the verbal contract between them... means they are not cheating the contract or breaking the rules, agreed upon rules, AKA cheating.

Cheating is a action that requires stepping outside the boundaries set by a partner.

All the time... swinging is another way of dating, although not my way. Can't say it leads to monogamy for most but does not bar the way.
