When you are single, your actions only affect yourself. You can pretty much do wtf you want. When you're in a relationship, your actions also affect them. So you tend to be on your better behavior.

Couples tend to make each other better. They do things like quit smoking together, lose weight together, resolve to study harder or find better jobs together. They grow and mature together. They climb the ladder of life and raise their standard of living together.

They don't want to fail, because if they fail, the other person loses resolve and is more likely to fail also. You don't want to let them down, so you do better yourself.
