Not always. In my last relationship, I was a very low rank in the military while my girlfriend came from a well-off family who supported her. My grandfather was passing away (or so it seemed at the time) and I had no money for a plane ticket home because I had just spent a lot of money on a date for her birthday. Granted, she offered because she knew I was never going to ask. Due to the time of year the ticket cost $700 round trip and I only had $200. She never asked for it back. A few weeks later, her dad fell ill right when my paycheck rolled around and her car broke down so I took him to the hospital and covered his deductible. In a serious relationship you help each other in times of need and you do not keep tabs on who did what. Helping only crosses over to "being played" when your partner does nothing to try to change things for the better. There is a difference between a handout and a handup.
