Out of curious, why does guys ask girls what’s their relationship with their dad like?

I got asked this one once but my dad is like my best friend. I saw another video of a guy asking this to a girl, so I am wondering.

There are two components to this: the first, and more obvious, is that a woman's relationship to her father is often a signboard for what her relationships with men in general will be like, and often contains signs of her general attitudes about men. If she hates them, you're in for trouble. If she worships them, you're in for trouble. It's not the fool-proof detection scheme that some guys think it is; if her father died or bailed on the family, her relationship's going to be nonexistent, but that doesn't reflect badly on HER, but it can usually give you a general idea of how she'll relate to you.

That also ties in to the second component: growing up without a father present is the single biggest predictor of future criminal behavior in a child. Not poverty, not race, not being the child of criminals. It's all about masculine vs feminine attitudes toward rules, following them, and the individual's place in society- and not only does that transcend culture, it transcends SPECIES (there are probably forms of socio-pyschological damage that occur when there's no mother figure present in a child's life, but there aren't enough of those to have firmly established anything yet, so far as I'm aware). Now, when a young man is lacking that presence, he typically acts out in ways that are highly visible- whatever they may be, they're hard to miss. With young women, it can be much trickier to spot.

In most cases, if you have a good relationship with your father, and you value and respect him, you're likely to have a similar relationship with the man in your life. If you have no relationship with your father, or have a bad relationship with him, then likely you have no experience having a GOOD relationship with a man, and so it will be almost impossible for a man to have a good relationship with you, no matter how hard he tries.

When you hear about a girl with "daddy issues", that's what's going on - her dad either wasn't in her life, or was a toxic or abusive influence on her life. Neither of those bodes well for her romantic partners.

In my experience, it’s usually said by men who wonder if they have a good relationship with their father… Because they want to know if the girl has daddy issues… Daddy issues are not seen as a good trait in women because they are seen as promiscuous, and other negative things…

Girls are often looking for someone who is just like her dad or the opposite of her dad. Knowing your relationship with your dad can give him a heads up about what you expect from a partner. He may pass on the opportunity if he feels he can't measure up.
