Any advice for a socially awkward person?

I’m quiet and to myself. He told our mutual friend to invite me to an event (which his family is performing) she told him I probably won’t go because of the event being late and I got work the next day, I’m a hermit, etc. etc. He rebuttal all the excuses I typical gave her and insisted her to invite me. I found it odd because I don’t really speak to him (he’s our boss by the way; him and her are close and I’m close to her) unless it’s strictly work related. I don't know how to feel about it since I’m still fairly new and I don’t want to break that social barrier with my boss. I don't know, any advice?
