Why is monogamy a thing? If not all our minds are monogamous?

Its like saying why do people strive for goodness when not everyone is good or cares to be it just societal norms and agreed on expectations on how we should act ofc there is and always will be people that divert which is OK just find someone that wants what u want

People like to have someone that is theirs, the decision to be with only one person makes it more special. Given free reign, many people would opt for multiple partners for themselves, but not for their partners. Monogamy is more manageable as an agreement that you both are solely together.

To the people that think monogamy is what *most* people want: why then is cheating so prevalent?

I think it's just something that developed recently before before most people would be dying and 90 percent of people never got to pass down their genetics anyways. Its probably better for the children since they have both parents involved and not focused on another partner's child.

Because the family unit is the best way to raise children and has been for millenia. Before that it was either communal or all the women for few guys. But neither brings good results for the community in comparison to monogamy.
