I hit my puppy, and I feel horrible, how do I gain his trust back?

Question

Before I start, let me tell you I feel like I don’t deserve him, I feel horrible, I feel angry at myself.

He loves me a lot, he’s 4 months old and trusts me and loves me the most in the universe.

He’s very naughty and he had peed in my bed a few times, I never hit him for that, he used to bite me really hard, I never hit him for that, he used to cut lots of my clothes with his teeth, I forgave and just gave him a little slap on the buttocks.

But this time, he cut my best outfit, the most expensive one I’ve had and the one that I’ve loved the most.

I felt so angry, I hit his butt really hard, my hand hurt, I slapped his butt 4 times. He looked at me surprised and shocked.

Yes, I feel awful for having my most valuable outfit ruined but I feel even more awful for breaking his trust and now that he sleeps by my side and keeps loving me, I feel even more horrible.

Please help me. How to prove him I love him a lot and how to make him trust me again.

You seem very sweet and caring my best advice would be to just show him lots of love I assume you already do that and also hitting dogs when they do something bad is actually helpful as long as you are not hurting them badly it's like the only way you can teach a dog what not to do what you did was right although maybe a bit to hard of a hit. Just try not to hit hard to where it hurts both of you but more to where it stings him but he is still fine

I'd be pissed off too if one of my dogs did that, understandable maybe necessary so that it won't happen again, don't worry about it though the thing about dogs is that they'll love you regardless like nothing ever happened, of course never hit them, unless it's a freakin good looking outfit, but now just pet him/her and play and feed him and it'll all be good (I have a hunch the dog's fine but you're feeling bad about it)

dogs are kinda like kids if they do something bad spank them but not extremely hard to hurt them just enough so he learns not to do that my baby I spank her when she chews something or bites but she thinks I'm playing so you might want to try another method like electronic dog training whistle when you catch him chewing your clothes again
