Why would friend with feelings for you jump into a serious relationship with someone else?

The typical friend develops feelings over years and just when it seems like the two are on the same page one jumps ship, pulls the rip cord before anything more can happen and runs into the arms of another person.

Things can't move any faster between the two seemingly strangers within only a few months time there's the 'I love yous', the meeting the family and moving in together in record time.

Leaving the other in pieces wondering how everything could go to nothing so fast.
